RNA Quality Assessment - Support

Quality Assessment Review:

Most Users evaluate the integrity of their RNA as a way to determine the performance of their samples on Affymetrix microarrays. We have attempted to establish a correlation between the quality score and sample performance, and establish a cutoff for quality control purposes.

Previously, the Facility operated a Bioanalyzer for assesing RNA quality. We gathered information regarding sample origin, RIN values and the performance of the sample on Affymetrix microarrays in order to define a RIN (RNA Integrity Number) cutoff for expression array performance.

RIN Cutoff:

Agilent Technologies recommends that the RIN be at least 7 to perform well in gene expression studies. We have found some samples with lower RIN scores that have performed reasonably well and further assessment is required before we can establish a clear cutoff. For now, each sample is treated on an individual basis and the User has the final say on whether they want their samples to proceed.
